Historic Hotels of Europe has been recognised as the ‘Best Heritage Hotels Collection in Europe’ at LUXlife Magazine’s 2020 Resorts & Retreats Awards. In the face of such a difficult year, it’s a special honour to be recognised by such a prestigious influence in the travel sphere – particularly as LUXlife Magazine itself acknowledges the obstacles 2020 posed and, through the awards, took measures to ‘celebrate those who have dedicated resources to navigating the unique challenges they have faced’. It’s a testament to the hard work and passion Historic Hotels of Europe continues to put into their work, providing marvellous travel memories and historic experiences for all.

Adding to their winning streak, three beautiful Italian hotels have recently joined Historic Hotels of Europe. All neighbouring some of Italy’s best sights – and boasting rich histories and unique perks – each property promises exquisite experiences that guests will treasure forever.

Locanda dei Mai Intees, Azzate – Lombardy

With an enviable location close to Lake Maggiore, Lake Como and Milan, this renovated gem is the ideal spot for travellers looking to explore Italy’s many fruits: beginning with the hotel itself. Locanda dei Mai Intees is a fine example of history preserved at its finest. Renovations have been done with the utmost care and attention, and the hoteliers have even managed to keep the original 15th century frescoes in the dining room and 16th century fireplace intact. Complete with a tower, courtyard, sun-drenched veranda and restaurant – which was once a famous meeting point for both elite and international clientele – there’s plenty at this loveliest of Italian hotels for tourists to sink their teeth into.

Hotel Villa Schuler, Taormina – Sicily

Villa Schuler is the oldest owner-run hotel in Sicily, having been converted from a Sicilian mansion back in 1905. Over the years, it’s seen many charismatic guests pass through its doors – from artists and bohemians to noble and wealthy travellers – who flocked to this beloved locale to experience Italy’s beauty up-close: and with its stunning views of the Ionian Sea, Mt. Etna and the Bay of Naxos, it never failed to deliver.

In recent years, Hotel Villa Schuler has been extensively refurbished to restore its old elegance and charm. The hoteliers have also incorporated modern flourishes to take the property to the next level, including a rooftop lounge and terrace, panoramic lift and garages fitted with electric vehicle charging stations. You couldn’t dream up a more dazzling destination.

Principe Lampedusa, Palermo – Sicily

For travellers who rate ‘culture’ and ‘history’ highly on their list of holiday priorities, Principe Lampedusa is a sure win. Not only is it based in the Italian Capital of Culture, it’s also at the heart of an Arab-Norman UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over fifty historical areas are accessible on foot in just a few minutes from the property’s front doors, allowing for plenty of outings and discoveries during any length of stay: perfect for curious souls. The hotel staff – which pride themselves on their personable service – will even organise guided excursions and create personalised itineraries for their guests, too: coupling thoughtful sightseeing ideas with the Italian hotel’s beautiful accommodation options. All bedrooms are renovated, soundproofed and fitted with luxe amenities, from LCD TVs to backlit mirrors and minibars.
